Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers (Class A, B & F)

Identified by the yellow label, wet chemical extinguishers gently spray potassium salts in a fine mist which produces a soapy film also known as saponification. This fine mist creates a cooling effect, smothers the fire, deprives oxygen and due to the gentle extinguishing spray it avoids spreading, aggravating and splashing hot oils and fat which is present in the kitchen.

Saponification: "the process of converting fat, oil, or lipid, into soap and alcohol by the action of aqueous alkali." (source)

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers Use

Wet chemical fire extinguishers are found commonly in commercial kitchens, restaurants or areas where you can find small fryers including homes. If a kitchen fire seems as though it could be controlled easily then using a fire blanket would avoid spraying fryers with wet chemicals. We recommend having both the extinguisher and fire blanket easily available in these areas. Wet chemical fire extinguishers will often have a long hose with rigid nozzle to allow the user to extinguish the fire from a safe distance.

These extinguishers cover:

  • Class A fires - Wood, cardboard, paper, cloth, fabrics, plastics and solid combustibles.
  • Class B fires - Flammable liquids, petrol, oils etc.
  • Class F fires = Cooking oils and deep fat fryers.

Wet Chemical extinguisher: Suitable for kitchens, restaurants, hospitals, hotels, schools, food supply chains & retail.
